Concern about sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young athletes is growing in our American society. SCD in a young athlete (ages 10 to 19) is a devastating event that has a tremendous impact not just on the athlete’s family, but on the school and the entire community. The death of a student-athlete frequently attracts extensive media attention and triggers debate on the adequacy of pre-participation screening and emergency planning at athletic events.
